The Goethe-Institut is the cultural agency of the Federal Republic of Germany, dedicated to promoting the learning of German around the world and arranging international cultural cooperation projects.

The New Zealand branch of Goethe-Institut was established in 1980 in Wellington. Its current activities include the “Life Swap” cartoon film series and blog, the “Living Language” multimedia project focusing on the ways in which language and multilingualism shape and expand our view of ourselves and the world, the “Portofrei” (postage paid) dialogue on the future of liberal democracy, initiated by Goethe-Institut branches all around the world – and, from 18 November 2017 to 31 January 2018, the writer-in-residence project that this website is all about.
